Google says, 1 Trillion Hits for Facebook

There, Google said it, the number 1 social networking site has ammassed a total of almost 1 Trillion visitors last June 2011. What an impression!?

According to the Google data, Facebook had about 870 million unique visitors in June. Facebook has said it has more than 750 million users. The website Techland guessed that the disparity between the two numbers is likely due to visitors to Facebook who don't have, or weren't logged into, Facebook user accounts -- sounds like a good guess.

Yahoo! is at a distant third with an overall hits of almost 80 Billion (wow) and almost 600 Million (unique visitors).

What about Bing?

Bing is at 11th place with 230 Million unique visitors and 9.6 Billion Page Views

Just recently, J.K. Rowling, author of the epic book saga Harry Potter unveiled the latest community of avid Harry Potter followers - call it Pottermore.

Speculations about the site has been hovering worldwide and anticipations are growing exponentially, as the epic finale also draws it's final curtain. The last of the seven part series is expected to be another blockbuster hit.

Theories and Divination

Wild guesses and bizarre theories about the Pottermore has circulated around the web, some speculated that Pottermore is Rowling's last hurrah and it is a sequel to Harry Potter 7. Some guess on the other hand turns right.

Pottermore is actually an online reading experience aimed at giving the online readers a unique and exciting way to read Harry Potter books.

The site, which Rowling launched via YouTube, will sell her seven Potter novels as e-books and audiobooks in several different languages. It will also reveal background details on characters and settings Rowling says she's been “hoarding for years.”

Fans will have 18,000 words of new Harry Potter content to devour in a matter of hours. Meanwhile, Rowling has deftly cornered the market on proceeds from the sale of her books online, without having to pay Apple or Amazon one galleon.

Nokia Updates - MeeGo's First and Last Appearance and Patent Wars

Sometime around June, Nokia won a patent case against Apple.

Nokia published on their June 14 report some relevant details of their victory against the disputed patent case. Ideally this victory could give Nokia and added revenue but considering Nokia's investment on research, this could well be just a balancing item in their portfolio.

"We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees," said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia. "This settlement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market."

"The financial structure of the agreement consists of a one-time payment payable by Apple and on-going royalties to be paid by Apple to Nokia for the term of the agreement. The specific terms of the contract are confidential."

Could it be Nokia's strategy to go on after several smartphone makers and make bucks out of licensing agreements?

Just recently the largest cellphone maker introduced the first Windows-Based

smartphone in an attempt to shake things up and halt the impending dominance of giant

players like Android, Samsung and iPhone.

Beating the Android first? And Why Windows?

Well, we heard Nokia's (through Nokia CEO Stephen Elop) blunt statement saying its ultimate priority is to beat Android. Further he added that Nokia's rationale behind Windows-adaptation is that the Microsoft platform has a better way to compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

Why not MeeGo or Android? For MeeGo, ideally it would require Nokia a considerable amount of investment to develop the platform. It has yet to grow and needs further enhancement. While choosing Android could possibly make Nokia 'another Android phone' out there and will eventually lose it's identity.

And the fact that Elop is a former Microsoft employee so the arrangements wouldn't be that arduous at all.

In my opinion, Nokia must take this leap as an advantage and listen to the needs of the market. Windows OS is still the largest OS worldwide (although their dominant status could be diminished in some time). Nokia and Microsoft are two giant forces and they must be think revolutionary this time. Better UI, Better Synchronization Features, that's what we need.

The Future of MeeGo, looks cool but Nokia says 'NO'

It was codenamed 'Sea Ray', but the promising Nokia N9 (that runs on a MeeGo platform) has been short lived. Elop recently announced that even if N9 will succeed, MeeGo will not be used anymore. It may be a disappointing news as we are interested to see Nokia back on the smartphone arena. The Twitter war apparently erupted upon Gloria Arroyo's barrage of disappointment towards Pnoy's lack of competence leading to economic downturns. Speaking in public while suffering on a 'pinched nerve' and looking awkwardly funny with a neck brace on TV, Arroyo remarked how the current administration has failed to continue the momentum of her supposed economic gains left when she turned-over the government to her successor. The cold, stormy Friday turned out to be a heated avenue of verbal melee.

Taiwan Blogger fined $7k over Negative Noodle Review. Eff

After visiting a Taichung beef noodle restaurant in July 2008, Liu wrote in her article that the noodle she ate 'was too salty' and 'the place was unsanitary because there were cockroaches' and that the owner was a “bully” because he let customers park their cars haphazardly.

These remarks led to her demise as she was sentenced to 30-days in jail and a fine worth $6665. The judge ruled out that she shouldn't have made the conclusion that the noodle was too salty because she only had one dish on her only visit.

"Huang Cheng-lee (黃呈利), a lawyer in Taichung, said that bloggers who post food reviews should remember to be truthful in their commentary and supplement their comments with photographs to protect themselves."

This may provide all bloggers a lesson to be careful and objective in all their reviews, but this incident also pose a certain risk towards the blogger community. I am afraid that this is the start of the forthcoming intimidation and the increasing hostility towards the blogging community.

Restaurants and food entrepreneurs must not fear nor intimidate bloggers or journalists. I don't think a single review will ultimately affect the entire business in the long run.

As the Formula 1 2010 season nears its end, we will be witnessing two new circuits before we finally know who'll be the World Champion for this year.

F1 gave Korea GP the green light and it's gonna be exciting. After months of waiting and speculations that this circuit will not be completed as expected, race organizers welcomed the FIA's approval and it will be the host of this week's exciting race.

Liberty Telecom is going WIMAX

And yes we welcome new technology. I just came across this recent article about Liberty's entrance to the wireless competition.

What is Wimax?

WiMAX is an IP based telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes from fixed point to multi point links to portable to fully mobile internet access.

Unlike WiFi which relies on unlicensed spectrum, WiMAX requires a specific frequency. (1)

LIBERTY Telecom Holdings Inc. may soon slug it out with the major rivals as it is expected to commercially launch its WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) service. This as the company will soon ends its two-month free trial service offer to select clients..

Liberty currently offers WiMAX in selected areas in Metro Manila. Those from Mandaluyong, San Juan, Makati and Quezon City and those availed of the trial service reportedly enjoys faster wireless transmission of data and mobile communications compared to fixed DSL (digital subscriber line)or  3G (third generation) connectivity.

Liberty, which once offered traditional telecom services, will now focus on Internet broadband and WiMAX to bring the company back to profitability. It expects the two services would account for more than 90 percent of its projected sales and subscriber base.

WiMAX is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology is said to provide the last mile connectivity. The resulting competition may bring lower pricing for both home and business customers or bring broadband access to places where it has been economically unavailable.

Liberty wants to be a major player in the wireless broadband sector and may likely succeed in its objective despite stiff competition. Anastacio Martirez, former chief mobile head and head of consumer business at Smart Communications Inc. and former chief executive officer for the Jakarta-based PT Smart Telecom, joined Liberty on February 4, 2009.

“Looking at the enormous potential and the opportunities that the wireless broadband sector in the Philippines has to offer, I am extremely excited and hope to play an instrumental role in establishing Liberty Telecoms as a strong player in the Philippine telecom industry,” Martirez said last year.

When sought for comment, Martirez did not want to provide details on Liberty’s ongoing WiMAX trial service and impending commercial launch. But the National Telecommunications Commission already approved Liberty’s request to test WiMAX.

Sources said Liberty will be offering cheap subscription rates for WiMAX service to entice the public to shift to the company. The rates may be offered for as low as P250 a month.

Carriers are unfazed by the entry of Liberty, saying it has no network to speak of amid the financial backing of food and beverage giant San Miguel Corp. (SMC) and Qatar Telecom (QTel), Qatar ’s dominant telephone service provider.

SMC has formalized its entry in the telecommunications industry by acquiring 32.7 percent of Liberty for P1.88 billion. Its wholly owned unit Vega Telecom Inc. has acquired 597.111 million shares of Liberty for P3.25 each. The purchase was done via a series of block sales at the bourse.

Liberty claims that its capability to take advantage of the promising WiMAX technology will put the company to at least at par with the other phone firms in the country.

Among the carriers, Globe Telecom was the first to deploy WiMAX as a cost efficient alternative to cable and digital subscriber line in bringing wireless broadband access to the public.

“Yes, Liberty has the frequencies but it is just starting to build its network. Whereas existing carriers already have the network, the frequencies, and subscribers,” said a telco official.

Another source said carriers offering WiMAX or those planning to now scramble for wireless broadband frequencies to offer WiMAX service. Since no new frequencies have been recently allocated by the National Telecommunications Commission some carriers resort to buying other small phone firms which had been awarded precious frequencies even before demand for the service surge.

Liberty has 40 megahertz (Mhz) in the 2.5 gigahertz (Ghz) to 2.7 GHz spectrum and nearly 100Mhz situated in the 700MHz frequency bandwidth. It informed the stock exchange last year that capital spending budget for the next 10 years is estimated to reach P7.15 billion. Of which, P5.11 billion will sourced internally and the remaining from new investors.

Rival Smart Communications Inc. also obtained a 20Mhz in the 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz spectrum to rollout WiMAX services.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. president Napoleon Nazareno has said the dominant carrier welcomes competition.

Nazareno said the more players there are in the market, the more choices there would be for consumers. “We welcome competition. We are focus on what we are doing given the innovations we have put in place and those that will be put in place.”

For listed firm Digital Telecommunications president James Go said last year that nothing beats the original. “Remember, we started it all. Others just followed. We still have an edge and we will make sure that we will be ahead of the others.”(2)

How sweet! And I know it is a late reaction already, but I just learned that Bayan Telecommunications and BBDO-Guerrero/Proximity won at Araw Awards.

Great! Weird, but I used to dream that I am working at an elite advertising agency and I am a top-caliber AM or CD. But I cannot complain, I got an AM job, but with a telco :)

At least now I can boast that my employer has a TV Ad and it is a winner.

Hi Guys! Lately I have been looking out for the perfect broadband companion. I don't want to go for Globe or Smart because of the reliability issues, so I am keeping an eye for Bayan and Sun Cellular.

I will not be biased because I am a Bayan employee, besides there is no reason for me to be so since there are still a lot of room for Bayan to gain momentum in the mobile business.

I am using Sun Wireless Broadband right now. It is decent, I've been getting 300-600 Kbps average and it is pretty good. Besides being free, Sun Cellular's speed can be attributed to it's conservative subscriber base. But I need to look for better options. The Sun Wireless BB I am using right now is free for only '4' months.

I came across Bayan Wireless BB via EVDO technology. Take note that Bayan is running also on CDMA-EVDO Technology. I have a demo from them a couple of hours ago and it is just ok. Perhaps, maybe it is because I am located in a safari inside QC that's why my EVDO CPE is not picking-up the appropriate signal, but nevertheless it was a satisfactory surf.

I will get an employee discount from this so I daresay 'why not try it?'.

There is nothing new about this Corby series (and I gotta say the Corby is a great name), but the package vis-a-vis price is an attention grabber.

2009 has been a new year of social media. And in the year of fast status message, blogging has been set aside and Twitter and Facebook ate the internet arena.

But 2010 is gonna be another year of breakthrough. For sure FB and Twitter will stay, but we can see the rise of Microblogging and the battle of Search Engines. Now that browsers are becoming more open to third-party developers, we can definitely see more choices to make our internet experience more dynamic.

I almost forgot about my blog, but nevertheless, I am going to revive it and will share new things again with you.

I love to share my ideas and I am very much interested with new things that can have minimal or great impact to our lives.

I just recently received an SMS Advisory from Globe advertising their latest offering - the Globe Super DUO.

How does it works? Basically, it allows SuperDUO subscribers to avail of unlimited calls to Globe and Touch Mobile Subscribers.

How much does it cost? On Top of the DUO Subscription (which is Php 399), subscribers will pay an additional Php 499 on their monthly bill.

I do hope that it is limited to Postpaid subscribers only as this will definitely congest the Globe's network.

Starting July 2010, every person in Finland will have the right to a one-megabit broadband connection as an intermediate step, says the Ministry of Transport and Communications. By the end of 2015, the legal right will be extended to an impressive 100 Mb broadband connection for everyone.

According to Wikipedia, approximately 79 percent of the Finnish population use the Internet. Finland had around 1.52 million broadband Internet connections by the end of June 2007 or around 287 per 1,000 inhabitants.

I definitely agree with some of the insights around the web lately. With the advent of netbooks, and the success stories, it wouldn't take a microbiologist to understand the correlation between rise in Netbooks' sales and laptop's revenue decline.

According to DisplaySearch, the decline in mobile PC sales is attributed to the rise of Netbook. Netbook revenue is up 264 percent from last year, and have contributed to an overall lowering of the average PC cost by 19 percent.

Why? People are getting busy, and they are more mobile right now. And carrying a bulky Toshiba Protege can be painful in the pocket and in the shoulders.

And Netbooks are light, cheap and they can be pretty useful too. The only weak points that I see with Netbooks are its power and reliability. Right now, most of the Netbooks in the market are running on a 1.66Ghz max power. And this is not acceptable to me.

When Steve Jobs released iPhone on June 2007, the touch screen phone market went into a frenzy. TIME Magazine hailed it as the 'Invention of the Year' in 2007. The success went on. The 3G Version has been released in 2008.

Powered by its own Operating System (iPhone OS), it is built based on the Mac OS X technology which is responsible for its superb motion graphics.

But the almighty iPhone must not rest on its laurels. The Apple hype may not be forever successful and they might be too complacent to realize that their magic is over.

So who the hell is Android?

Android is mobile operating system initially developed by another technology giant "Google".

By the end of 2009, at least 18 phone models are expected to be powered by the Android OS. Some of which are HTC Magic, HTC Hero and Motorola Cliq.

Based on the video notes, it is designed to run both on the GSM and CDMA band category which allows it to be used by most of the handsets on the market.

In a surprising survey, Smarty Pants unveiled the top 20 favorite lists of children for 2009 and guess who topped the list.

We have yet to see the statistics here in the Philippines because we know Wii is not as popular as those who are in the US.

Kids may gobble up junk food, but it seems they love playing with Nintendo devices even more.

Out of the 100 most loved brands for America's children and tweens, the Nintendo Wii and DS scored the first and second spots, according to a report by research firm Smarty Pants.

The survey "Young Love" found that even tempting snacks like Oreos and M&Ms trailed behind the Nintendo gear, taking the third and fifth spots in the list, respectively. Other techie items loved by 6- to 12-year-olds included the iPod at number 12, Sony's Playstation at 14, YouTube at 36, and Microsoft's Xbox at 42.

Kids participate in more than $500 billion in consumer spending each year, according to Smarty Pants, and their parents consider their favorites when buying everything from snacks to entertainment, both of which popped up heavily on the list.

The latter being the newest track makes this season truly a season of breakthroughs and changes.

Since Michael Schumacher left the competition, it seems like Formula 1 has become a battle of pace and technology. The glory days of aggressive driving and fearless overtaking has been put aside.

South Korea is spending millions of dollars on a track in Yeongam county and officials are confident the Korean Grand Prix, set for October 17, will quickly make its mark. Work is in progress at the 5.6km site, 320km south of Seoul, where seating to accommodate 135,000 spectators is being built.

Organizers say the main circuit will include Asia's longest straight stretch of 1.2km which will allow speeds of up to 320km per hour. Seoul has hosted the Olympic Games, the Asian Games and a football World Cup, but never a Formula One race, despite a major domestic auto industry. [Source: CNN]

U.S. F1 team say 2010 car is now being built

Glad to hear that American team is back on track (in what appears as a European-dominated sport). Though we are not seeing the return of Indianapolis, we are about to see an All-American Car in the 2010 season. So, who will drive this car?

The new U.S. F1 team have started building their 2010 car and will have it finished in time for testing in January, team principal Ken Anderson said on Wednesday.

"Our world headquarters is now complete and fully functional, and the 2010 race car is in the construction phase," Anderson said in a Q&A released by the team based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"Thanks to our in-house design and engineering staff and the aid of our technical partners, for the last 10 to 12 months, the car has gone through thousands of iterations in a virtual environment," he added.

"With this virtual design, we can test and be sure that it's right from structural, design and engineering standpoints, so we don't have to make a part, test it, break it and start again.

"Our timing is according to plan, with an early November "roller" and a finished car in time for January 2010 testing," said Anderson.

He said a number of staff recruited from other Formula One teams would be joining formally at the end of the month.

"Building a team and a world-class manufacturing facility are a work-in-progress but we're ahead of schedule and are excited about going racing next year," added Anderson.

U.S. F1 are one of four new teams entering Formula One next year and are alone in being based in the United States rather than Europe.

Formula One's rulers have expressed concern in recent weeks, however, about the likelihood of the team being ready to start the season.

The sport's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone said last month of U.S. F1 that "possibly they are doubtful" while International Automobile Federation (FIA) President Max Mosley referred to "all sorts of rumours about them."

The team had hoped to field an all-American driver line-up, but co-founder Peter Windson was quoted as telling the autosport.com website that no longer looked likely.

"Our ambition to run two young Americans is looking more difficult," he said.

"I'm still hoping we'll be able to run one American, but that's a tall order because there aren't many Americans out there with superlicences."

Is it a Netbook or a Cellphone? Sharp introduces 'hybrid'

They call it as 'gadget with an identity crisis' - CNET spotted Sharp's new eye-candy and I am not really sure if this will really hit the shelves.

It is called "NetWalker" - a part Netbook and a part ultramobile PC. It basically adds up to the hundreds of gadget trying to fit in the smallest of smallest of the smallest category.

On its arsenal is a 5-inch touchscreen, a weak 512MB Memory, Wireless LAN. It is powered by Ubuntu 9.0.4, so we can expect Firefox and Thunderbird to be there. 800MHz Freescale i.MX515 processor, built in 802.11 b/g WiFi, 2 x USB 2.0 ports and a 68 percent Qwerty keyboard.

So what you think? I think this is a great start of hybrid trend but I am not sure if Sharp can pull it off as I am afraid that this will be associated to the calculator range.

A bit keyboardish, I have yet to see it personally if the keypad is finger-friendly and ergonomically designed.

The way you use it though, is more like a UMPC. Holding the NetWalker with two hands, you type with your thumbs. And on the right side above the keyboard is an optical pointer that, when you run a finger over it, functions as a mouse.

The price is a more Netbook-like $500, but it's unclear how consumers will respond. It's only been available here in Japan for a couple weeks, so there aren't any solid sales numbers yet to offer any picture of how customers are reacting to it. But history shows that just hovering somewhere in between two established categories of computing is an easy way to turn off a lot of potential buyers.

IE 6 for Windows Mobile: Better, Prettier and Faster

Apparently, the new interface of Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile Smart phones will address the old IE's lack of features and slowness.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6 clearly improves on previous versions of the browser, but apart from speed, how does it compare to the stable version of Opera Mobile, version 9.5, the other mobile browser that's commonly preloaded on Windows phones? (Opera Mobile 9.7 beta is also available for testers, as is competing browser Skyfire. We chose Opera 9.5 as a basis of comparison because of its ubiquity.) Both IE Mobile 6 and Opera Mobile can download image files and apps, copy and paste, and cursorily manage bookmarks. Internet Explorer Mobile 6 has some advantages over Opera Mobile, however. It combines the URL and search bar where Opera Mobile separates them. It nicely surfaces the search history in a drop-down arrow on the right edge of the URL/search bar. The "you are here" map (see screenshot) and ability to easily cut, copy, and clear URL text with a long press on the URL bar are nice perks. We find the navigation buttons slightly more intuitive in IE Mobile 6, too. In addition to Opera's beneficial features, we'd like to see Internet Explorer Mobile outfitted with a refresh button on-screen, not just in the More menu, and we'd like a way to navigation forward too, not just back. We'd also strongly like to reorder favorites by dragging and dropping, which would make the process of adding bookmarks to new folders much less ponderous.

The browser isn't as full-featured as we think it should be. (Microsoft says it's aiming for a browser simple enough for the average phone user.) Regardless, IE Mobile 6 is a drastic improvement over previous builds on the interface front, and it's suitable for basic users who want to browse, but who won't seek fancy customization. If Microsoft can manage to rev up the browser's speed and can deliver a robust extensions gallery, it may have a shot at developing its mobile browser more or less in step with Opera Mobile, Skyfire, and Mozilla Fennec--instead of chasing behind them.

Anti-Wi-Fi Paint

The idea is simple: Use a special paint on walls where you don't want wireless to pass through (say the exterior of your house). The secret is mixing aluminum-iron oxide particles in with the paint. The metal particles resonate at the same frequency as Wi-Fi and other radio waves, so signals can't pass through the thin layer of pigment. Outsiders would simply be unable to access your wireless network, just as you, inside the house, won't be able to interlope on anything beamed on the outside.

Developed by the University of Tokyo, the paint is said to be the first that can block radio frequency in higher spectra where Wi-Fi and other higher-bandwidth communications occur rather than just low-frequency wireless like FM radio. Most Wi-Fi technologies operate at 2.4GHz; the Tokyo paint can reportedly block frequencies all the way up to 100GHz, with a 200GHz-blocking paint now in the works.

The paint isn't just of interest to those concerned about wireless leaking out of the building. Movie theaters have long been interested in finding a legal way to keep cell phones silent during screenings. Electronic jammers that actively block wireless signals are illegal, but passive materials that prevent wireless signals from getting through are not. Since the wireless-blocking paint can also block the lower-frequency signals that cell phones use, addled mobile junkies would have no outlet for reaching the outside world.

But, in my opinion, securing a router password is still the best thing to do. This idea could not be 100% effective.

Came across a recent article on the web about Dell Latitude Z. And curiosity starts now. But of course, I have to see it, feel it and touch it personally. Will do a research on its advent here in the Philippines.

The system works a lot like your electric toothbrush. A special dock (available as a $200 option) has a coil of wire inside that matches up with a coil on the bottom of the Latitude Z. When the two coils come in contact, power is transferred over that small distance through induction. Dell says it is no slower to charge this way than through plug-in power (a standard plug is also available when you're on the road and away from the dock). Getting the laptop situated just-so on the dock so that the two coils are in contact didn't seem as easy as it should be, but overall I found the innovation to be decisively cool. [Read More]

We have seen the devastating effect of the typhoon Ondoy. For two-days, we are witness to the raging winds and tremendous rainfall that wreak havoc to Metro Manila. The East side were the hardest hit.

Electricity are down, lines of communications falter, water supply are scarce and floods engulfed the entire metropolis. The Philippines are vulnerable to this short notice mayhem and the people was caught surprised, unprepared. The Filipinos thought that the rains are not going to end.

Internet connection and mobile phone signals are rare. But it didn't stop the Filipinos to keep in touch in the virtual world. Facebook and Twitter are the newest way spread the news. Television has been outpaced. The television has improved a lot, but the internet has been growing faster.

As the seconds passed by, Twits flash in every page. Notices, Information, Rescue requests, warnings and pledges are the trending topic. The accessibility of cameras and camcorders has led to the quick pace in news delivery. There is no MTRCB in social media. For once, the viewer controls what they want to see.

The images are raw. The words are commanding. Truly, the social media revolution has changed the landscape of information dissemination.

And this is going to be the trend. More and more people will embrace this phenomenom. And definitely, the TV will learn its lesson. The opportunity is in the free market.

Are you writing your holiday wish list already?

I have came across D5000 lately, but since my budget is relatively low, I am gearing up for a least expensive DSLR but with a good personality.

Nikon gives us their latest entry-level compact DSLR. I kept thinking whether I will buy D60, but my online buddies are telling me to try the D3000 instead. Trying to be a guinea-pig this time.

The Nikon D3000 is the company’s latest entry-level DSLR, featuring 10.2 Megapixels and an easy-to-use control system aimed at DSLR beginners and those wanting to upgrade from a point-and-shoot camera. Announced in July 2009, it’s the successor to the popular D60, and sits below the D5000 in the current Nikon range. The major new features are a larger 3in screen, an 11-point AF system and a new Guide mode for beginners.

Like earlier Nikon entry-level DSLRs, the D3000 shares a number of features with its predecessor. At its heart is the same 10.2 Megapixel DX-format CCD sensor used in the D60, not to mention the D40x and D80 before that. This measures 23.6x15.8mm and delivers 3:2 aspect ratio images with a maximum size of 3872x2592 pixels. As before, there’s the choice of two lower resolutions, and the option to save in three different JPEG compression levels, along with the RAW format.

As we’ve seen on the models prior to the D3000 which share the same sensor, it’s certainly capable of delivering good quality results, but inheriting this older component means there’s no Live View nor video recording facilities on the D3000. The lack of a movie mode isn’t unusual for an entry-level DSLR, but the absence of Live View is. Apart from Sony’s cheapest Alpha A230, most of the D3000’s major rivals (including Canon’s year-old EOS 1000D / Rebel XS) feature Live View, and while the feature is still shunned by many traditionalists, it’s important for many of Nikon’s target audience who are upgrading from a point-and-shoot model. The cheapest Nikon body with Live View remains the D5000, which also features a movie mode.

A one-month worth of rain

It has been more than three months since my last post here. I have a new job and I became very busy recently.

And I miss writing once again, that's why I am resurrecting Cybernation Philippines.

Ondoy, with winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of 100 kph, hit the provinces of Aurora and Quezon at around 11 a.m. yesterday, then moved through Central Luzon at 19 kph, the state weather bureau said.

Government weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the equivalent of one month’s worth of rain fell on Metro Manila in less than a day.

“We knew there would be rain but not like this,” Quitlong said.

About 34.1 centimeters of rain fell on Metro Manila in just six hours, close to the 39.2-centimeter average for the entire month of September.

The previous record was 33.4 centimeters recorded during a 24-hour period in June 1967, according to chief government weather forecaster Nathaniel Cruz.

“However good your drainage system is, it will be overwhelmed by that amount of rainfall,” he said.

The heavy rains also forced one of the three airport terminals in Manila to cancel and divert flights after flooding affected its electrical system.

The storm also forced the cancellation of sea travel, leaving thousands of commuters stranded in the southern Tagalog and Bicol regions.

Huge traffic jams clogged the roads in the metropolis as floodwaters caused many vehicles to stall.

Main thoroughfares such as EDSA, the North and South Luzon expressways, the MacArthur Highway going to Malabon, Valenzuela and Bulacan, Quezon Avenue, España in Manila, Araneta Avenue and Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City and Taft Avenue in Manila were impassable to all types of vehicles.

Communications also bogged down in several areas in the metropolis.

Teodoro said the widespread flooding in Metro Manila prompted him to take the MRT to get to the NDCC and OCD offices at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

Teodoro appealed over the radio to motorists to leave their vehicles at home and take the MRT and LRT commuter trains, which were kept operating for 24 hours.

The lack of rescue equipment and the traffic gridlock in most streets in the metropolis greatly hampered rescue and relief efforts.

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said they encountered difficulty in their relief efforts because of the stalled vehicles blocking the already flooded streets.

President Arroyo rode in a military truck but got stuck in a traffic jam and was forced to take the MRT to Camp Aguinaldo.

Mrs. Arroyo called for sobriety and appealed for assistance to the needy.

Got a chance to get a peek on the newest entry-level SLR from Nikon. Hailed as the succesor of Nikon D60, the D5000 has 12.3 MP on its arsenal, CMOS sensor instead of CCD (more of sensor info here), expanded ISO range, 11-point auto-focus (AF) range (compared to D60's 3-point). And lastly, the swivel, flip-down LCD is a hot thing going on with Nikon. I am not an expert in SLR, but I think I will check on this stuff, rather than contemplating on the old D60.

We'll keep you posted on when it will be available in the Philippines.

Pacquiao Chronicles: Humble Beginnings

I certainly agree with Manny, the entire country is in a standstill during his fight.

Manny Pacquiao is now considered a national hero. Although, I still have second-thoughts with him being branded as a hero. I prefer to call him an 'inspiration'.

Manny has this cordial aura whenever he comes out of the locker room towards the boxing ring. The smile and humble charm makes him a notable fighter. You may feel that I am biased towards him because I am also a Filipino, but I think other people of different race feels that same way too.

Manny has associated himself with the 'masses'. And in this country where 40% of the 90 million population is poor, Manny Pacquiao's immancipation from poverty is everybody's dream too.

I am not happy because after this euphoria and madness, desperation and hopelessness will once again swallow the dream of the Filipino people. It is so sad, that after this fight, after this one-day triumph, will be another battle for survival.

I hope that the kind of spirit, that sense of unity and nationalism, will continue and prevail.

The Filipinos have long been waiting for the day when they can show the rest of the world that they are a nation of brotherhood and courage, not of 'servants'.

I think it is a great opportunity for us to shift the world view towards our nation.

Sadly, as I watch the super-delayed telecast in GMA-7, I am once again frustrated with the amount of advertisements that bombarded my boob tube. I observed that 60% of the ads are about adhesives and 20% about energy and vitality supplements, the rest are about government ads.

And hey, don't forget about the akonamismo.org ads which I strongly believe should be given an utmost priority.

For now, many thanks for Manny for giving us one more chance to be proud again.

It is believed that by 2011, the automobile industry is about to be dominated by either 'hybrid' cars or 'battery/electricity' powered cars. It may be a premature statement, but with the growing popularity of hybrid cars, as bolstered by the green movement, there is no doubt that the trend could be seen in the next two or three years.

Toyota Prius is the king of the 'hybrid' market. Introduced in 2004, the Toyota Prius has set the standard in the hybrid technology. And now, Honda is about to take the challenge in unseating the almighty Prius. Honda actually is the first one to introduce INSIGHT and the hybrid technology in the US in 1999.

When I saw the INSIGHT, I felt the same fascination when I saw the 2009 Accord. It was edgy with simple beauty. The Honda's hybrid flag bearer is expected to eat Prius' share due to pricing. INSIGHT is $2000 cheaper than its tough competitor, but the Prius is still greener and more fuel-efficient.

Honda and Prius are both designed to capture the middle-class market. However, with the recession still hovering around, I think Honda got the necessary advantage.

Sky Cable goes Hi-Def

Sky Cable seems to be on a roll. After the 12 Mbps marketing-hype, the leading cable company in the Philippines is once again trying to make the first attempt in HD world.

Sky Cable recently entered the HD technology. The company launched two High-Definition programs in Cable TV that is set to deliver better viewing experience to its subscribers.

For now, the two channels in the HD line-up is Discovery Channel (164) and History Channel.

According to Malou Esparrago, Sky Cable's head of Postpaid marketing, this new technology targets households with LCD, Plasma or Projector TV sets.

The company shelled-out Php 6 Million in the deployment of this HD service.

Subscribers also need to be "digital-ready" SkyCable subscribers, or must own TVs with digital connections, to avail of the service so they can make the easy transition to HD. Programs will be beamed via satellite in both 1080i or 1080p formats, along with mpeg2 audio, basically giving a subscriber a clearer picture and superior sound.

The SkyCable HD box, which can only work with LCD or plasma screen TVs, as well as projector TVs, can carry both standard definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) programs. Subscribers will pay a one-time installation fee of P5,000 for the HD box (which can also play music from a USB flash drive) and P499 a month for the two HD programs. Additional TVs in the household each require a separate HD box, but HD programs for succeeding TVs will only cost P152 a month.

Households which have already purchased the SkyCable DigiBox, which offers digital content, will pay less if they swap their existing Digibox with an HD box.

The U.S. has a detailed pandemic preparation plan that was drafted under former President George W. Bush. Many other countries have similar plans. SARS and bird flu have given international health officials useful practice runs for dealing with a real pandemic. We can identify new viruses faster than ever before, and we have life-saving technologies - like artificial respirators and antivirals - that weren't available back in 1918. "I believe that the world is much, much better prepared than we have ever been for dealing with this kind of situation," said Fukuda.

At the same time, the very nature of globalization puts us at greater risk. International air travel means that infections can spread very quickly. Social Networking sites are getting popular nowadays. Twitter is making a wave. And other networking sites are falling.

Remember Friendster? It went on as the most popular SN sites in the early 2000s, then came MySpace which is currently undergoing management troubles. We came across Hi5 but it didn't work well.

We met Multiply, but not so long since we are captured by Facebook and now Twitter is going to dominate the SN arena.

BAGHDAD - The founder and chairman of micro-blogging service Twitter said during a visit to Baghdad on Wednesday that the US election had convinced him to try and get more people "tweeting" in Iraq.
Jack Dorsey, among nine executives on a US State Department organised trip, held discussions with local mobile telephone companies and said he is determined to ensure that Iraqis could use Twitter on their handsets.
"We definitely have an intention to get it going here," he said, sat alongside bosses from top US IT giants Google and YouTube.
"I spoke to my business development person last night and said 'can we work with these people?'. We intend to do it."
Twitter, which allows users to pepper their followers with messages of a maximum 140 characters, known as updates or "tweets", can be used on mobile phones or through the Internet. (AFP)

Nokia is loosing its grip in the European market.

The S. Korean firm triumphed in getting the lead in the Europe mobile phone market according to GfK Market Research. Samsung topped the list in countries such as Britain, Belgium, Italy and France, with Samsung F480 as the frontrunner.

Perhaps, what could be the obvious reason in Samsung's unprecedented achievement is 'price factor', with the European market getting more price-conscious than ever before.

But still Nokia remains to be undefeated in the worldwide-sales arena but with Samsung intensifying their marketing efforts, Nokia is in danger.

I hope Nokia will finally think out-of-box and get rid of the Symbian OS. Nokia may be a practical choice in buying a cellphone, but the consumer I think is getting bored with Nokia's aesthetic. Nokia has to step-up and start being aggressive, not only in driving sales but in generating top-notch technology and cutting-edge innovations. Hear that, Noki?

With three consecutive loss, Ferrari scored nothing so far, their worst performance since 1981.

Even the McLaren team is faltering. But at least they have scored 8 points so far.

Ferrari may abandon development of their current car if their performance in Spain GP do not improve when a double- decker diffuser version is raced for the first time at May 10.

And of course F1 is full of drama and controversy. Brawn's unbelievable debut and maiden win is such a breakthrough in the Formula 1 history. Brawn is really a genius.

I am such a huge Ferrari fan, and I feel depressed everytime they lose in a Grand Prix. But I still have high hopes with the Scuderia Ferrari and hopefully things will get better in Europe and they will do better this time around. And I do agree with Stefano Domenicalli, to start the development of 2010 car as early as this month. But I think he must not abandon the development of the current car as well. Ferrari needs to fix their team and be ready for the challenge of Ross Brawn. Brawn still has his aces on his table, he used to be a Ferrari virtuoso.

I still not have given up with the Scarlet car yet. Ferrari have to licked-up their wounds and start all-over again.

Despite billions in sales — $13.3 billion over the last four quarters — the company has not been able to turn a consistent profit, losing $1.9 billion in the same period.

Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle will buy Sun shares for $9.50 each in cash. The price represents a 42 percent premium to Sun's Friday closing stock price of $6.69. Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law, but the four men denied the charges arguing that the files are not hosted on their servers.

Adamo is clearly a runaway winner in the memory side, making it run the 64-bit Windows Vista. Of course, better resolution too.

Both has an internal mic. That's a plus.

On the aesthetics side, I'm still having a confusion. I love both, I love Macbook's simplicity and the Adamo's edginess and boxy feel is sexy. See the picture below? That's what I am talking about.

So, I think Adamo is definitely giving more signs of winning, this Dell dude has a potential, but I have yet to see it's actual look on Monday. I'll do the verdict next time.

Microsoft has unveiled their latest string of ad campaign. The "Laptop Hunters" series is right on the money. Microsoft has long been waiting for a right timing and I think they did it this time. For quite some time, Apple/Mac killed Microsoft popularity, fighting Microsoft head-on with bold ads and stereotypes.

Microsoft tried to get up and face Mac with a game-face. They did the 'I'm a PC' campaign which is not really successful.

The "Laptop Hunters" series is real and it focuses on PC's strongest assets. Value for Money. I think PC should definitely going to the right direction rather than trying to confront it's adversary in a second-rate kind of way.

In my opinion, these new series will try to pick-up Microsoft's core strength. Price, Computing Power, Variety and Customization and of course accessibility and compatibility.

Apple has long withstand the stigma of being "pricey" by shadowing it's brand with the almighty iPod and iPhone. But still, Macbooks are not bestsellers.

I still want to have a Mac. I believe it is more powerful and better than PC. But Microsoft should continue differentiating itself with Mac and continue targeting the right market segment

Smart Choice: Battle of the Smartphones

Smartphones are considered to be business phones. It is likely to be seen on the hands of young professionals and executives with demands for mobile access and computing and organizing that a typical cellphone cannot do.

But apparently, the target market is no longer exclusive.

Since 2007, I have used three QWERTY phones, A1200, Treo and Moto Q. And everytime my friends and colleagues asked me if it is easier to use, I say - Yes.

The only downside of a smartphone is you can't text with just one hand. It is a multi-tasking killer. But still, my fascination and bias towards smartphones are undeniable.

While contemplating on this Maundy Thursday, I decided to collate all the front runners in the smartphone arena and judge who should I buy next. I am about to kill my Moto Q.

Nokia - E75

I have never used Nokia for four years now. I have always been a Motorola user. But Nokia is still on top of my choice when it comes to phone;s usability and technology. But Nokia has lost its edge in the design and OS integration.

What is cool with E75 is the slider feel. It's practical and compact and I never had any slider phone before. I like the snap sound every time you open it up but I am not lovin it yet because of the Symbian OS.

Will I buy it: No

HTC: Touch Diamond 2

In my opinion, the best-looking smartphone on the line-up, however what's up with the 5 MP camera with no flash? Windows Mobile 6.1 OS, 512 Mb RAM and very expensive.

Correct me if I am wrong, I believe that our equivalent of US' Federal Commission on Communication (FCC) is the National Telecommunications Commission. I saw an interesting article in Yahoo! yesterday about FCC's efforts in improving the state of America's internet infrastructure.

As mandated by the US congress, the FCC, should develop key strategies until 2010 to address controversial issues as Internet openness, definitions of affordability and what speeds are fast enough.

The FCC now defines broadband speed at about 768 kilobits per second, slow by most standards, most experts agree.

Bold move by the American state and it is reminiscent of what I wrote a week ago. That the Philippine government, in the jurisdiction of NTC, should allow itself to be a catalyst of industrialization. It must present an interventionist role in the telecommunication players arena.

Even the Australians are joining the Broadband Boost campaign.

The Australian government said on Tuesday that it would create a publicly owned company to build a national high-speed broadband network worth 43 billion Australian dollars, or $31 billion, in one of the largest state-sponsored Internet infrastructure upgrades in the world.

The plan is “the most ambitious, far-reaching and long-term nation-building infrastructure project ever undertaken by an Australian government,” Mr. Rudd told reporters.

The government’s announcement was a surprise rebuff to five private telecommunications firms, including Optus of Singapore and Axia NetMedia of Canada, which had been bidding to build a slower, less expensive network, with fiber optic cables reaching as far as local nodes, worth around 10 billion Australian dollars.

The United States follows suit, up one position from last year, thus confirming its pre-eminence in networked readiness in the current times of economic slowdown. Singapore (4), Switzerland (5) and the other Nordic countries together with the Netherlands and Canada complete the top 10.

he Networked Readiness Index (NRI), featured in the Report, examines how prepared countries are to use ICT effectively on three dimensions: the general business, regulatory and infrastructure environment for ICT; the readiness of the three key stakeholder groups; individuals, businesses and governments; to use and benefit from ICT; and their actual usage of the latest information and communication technologies available.

Out of the 134 countries, the Philippines ranked 85th with a score of 3.60.

The following Asian countries scored: South Korea (5.37). I agree with the three dimensions as a pre-requisite, the general business, regulatory and infrastructure. But permit me to add, that market should also be considered viable in developing a country's network infrastructure.

Globe to double broadband subscribers

Globe Telecom Inc. targets to double its broadband subscribers from 234,000 last year to almost half a million by end of 2009, said company President and CEO Ernest L. Cu.

Earlier, he has identified that broadband, the next major growth area for the telecommunications industry, is where Globe can take a lead. With just 8 percent of Filipino households having broadband connections todate, the new President seems much room for growth.

The entire Philippine broadband market shot up 67 per cent in 2008, registering a total of over 1.3 million subscribers with both data devices and pre-paid broadband subscription becoming more affordable to the masses.

Already, Globe has registered a tenfold growth in its broadband subscribers from 24,000 in 2005 to 234,000 in 2008. Fully mobile broadband subscribers have almost quadrupled, from just 6 percent, or 7,680 of the total of 128,000 subscribers in 2007 to 25 percent, or 58,500 last year.

In addition, Cu believes that net books laptop computers designed for wireless communication and internet access, “will be the key to propagating broadband use in the Philippines once the price barrier is broken.” At present, the 10 inch device still range from USD$300-400. Yet, “Net book prices are coming down and it will be interesting to see the development in this area,” he remarked.

The new Globe President pins his hopes on computer penetration skyrocketing in the country, the way wireless cellular phones did.

At present, the domestic market has 70 million Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) for a population of 90 million Filipinos. Eventually, “I won’t be surprised if we’ll have one computer per home,” Cu concluded.

Deborah Matis-Engle was sentenced Friday by a judge in Redding, Calif.

Investigators said Deborah Matis-Engle was speeding and text messaging when she slammed into the vehicles stopped at a construction zone in August 2007.

Shasta County prosecutor Stephanie Bridgett said the 49-year-old woman had paid several bills by cell phone in the moments before the crash.

She was in the middle of one of those transactions when she struck a vehicle that burst into flames, killing 46-year-old Petra Winn.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Stotter said he will appeal.

I hope Singtel wouldn't mind tinkering with their network diagram (I got it from their website so I am not sure if this is supposed to be confidential)

So will Globe succeed in their latest endeavor? Definitely, for there is no higher technology out there. The market is here, but the technology has not yet arrived. Props for Globe for pushing the envelope further, but I hope they push it more and wow us with their innovation.

I remember the Love Bug. It was year 2000 and the IT world is crazy about the worldwide fiasco this minute worm had caused to millions of computer around the globe. Funny as it may seem, the 'Love Bug' was believed to have originated from the Philippines.

The FBI have opened a criminal investigation. Reports suggest the virus may have originated in the Philippines. ISP Sky Internet Inc. in the Philippines are reported by ZDNet News to be hunting for a code writer who signed the virus code "Spyder, Manila, Philippines" and added the comment: "I hate go to school." This year, we are warned against the impending threat of the dreaded 'Conficker Virus' that is believed to unleash its effect on April Fool's Day. Around one to two million computers worldwide are expected to be affected by the virus.

The worm, a self-replicating program, takes advantage of networks or computers that haven't kept up to date with security patches for Windows RPC Server Service.

It can infect machines from the Internet or by hiding on USB memory sticks carrying data from one computer to another. (Inquirer.net)
